Results for South Sacramento.

In her first term as District 8 Councilmember, Mai Vang achieved remarkable milestones for South Sacramento, including establishing a lifesaving, community-led vaccination clinic; securing millions of dollars for youth through the Sacramento Children’s Fund; addressing food insecurity through the Food Justice Task Force; and securing acreage for affordable housing and youth sports.

Mai is just getting started.

My Priorities for District 8

  • We must preserve, protect and produce more affordable housing in our City to ensure our families can stay in Sacramento.

For every 1 person housed, 3 more residents become unhoused. We must continue to fight for stronger rent control and just-cause eviction standards to keep residents and families in their home.

I will continue to find new ways and incentives that will bring more affordable housing construction to Sacramento. I’m proud to partner with Councilmember Katie Valenzuela and Councilmember Caity Maple in our campaign to move Sacramento Forward. Join us and learn how you can help to protect families and keep them in their homes.

  • We must ensure that every young person in this city can reach their full potential. As your Councilmember, I helped pass the Sacramento Children Fund which will result in the most resources our city has ever committed to supporting young people. Moreover, I established the first ever youth liaison seat on the City Council–making sure young people have a voice in their local city government. I will continue the fight to ensure that our community centers and neighborhoods become hubs for “wraparound” services for our most vulnerable youth affected by poverty, violence, and trauma. I will continue to strengthen partnerships that leverage resources and improve access to public spaces for our youth and families such as joint-use agreements (open schoolyards) like Susan B. Anthony Park in the Detroit neighborhood.

  • Food insecurity is a significant challenge for many in South Sacramento due to limited access to nutritious food, lack of transportation, and rising costs. Many residents struggle to afford healthy meals, relying on convenience stores or unhealthy alternatives. As your councilmember, I established the city’s first-ever Food Justice Task Force to ensure we change the trajectory of our food system and build capacity of our community organizations to support families and neighborhoods. I will continue to advocate for healthy and locally sourced food and increase resources to expand community and urban gardens. In partnership with Assemblymember Stephanie Nguyen, I’m proud to have secured $500,000 in the state budget to launch the Meadowview farmer’s market coming soon!

  • Unrelenting heatwaves, poor air quality, heavy rains, and constant fires – the impacts of climate change affect the lives of everyone in our city. Amid our preparations for the climate's shifts, many of our elders and hardworking families in South Sac lack the resources to swiftly adapt to these sudden changes. I remain steadfast in my commitment to ensuring that we do not leave our most vulnerable communities behind.

I will continue to fight for increased tree canopy in South Sac, provide incentives for green infrastructure, broaden the scope of public transportation options to alleviate congestion and air pollution, and enhance the accessibility of walking, biking, and transit for our community.

  • Even before the pandemic, South Sacramento and minority-owned small businesses were always left out of City Hall’s economic development plans in favor of developers with inaccessible and expensive projects in the wealthier parts of our city. As your Councilmember, I fought to ensure more economic development dollars are invested in South Sac and worked with city leaders to plan for more equitable development in areas that will directly benefit our local residents. All my life, I have been helping underserved businesses and communities gain access to resources and this is what I will continue to do as your City Councilmember.

  • Keeping our community safe and building a healthy South Sac demands that we go beyond providing basic services for the community. As your councilmember, I advocated for transparency and pushed for more accountability so that our city can prioritize deescalation and invest our precious resources towards intervention and prevention programs that address the root cause of crimes in our neighborhoods. I will continue to prioritize public health and safety and work to ensure that we can continue to build trust in our community.
